EVENTS ON AT THE FESTIVAL

Keep up to date with the rundown of events for the 24th Annual Kumeu Classic Car and Hot Rod Festival - This page will have the latest announcements as we build up to the show.

SHOW SHEDS

Main Shed - The Peoples' Choice Award

When Kumeu’s promoters go through the applications from car owners keen to display vehicles in the main show shed, they’re not necessarily looking for the best of the best. “We want variety, be it a race car or a hot rod, to keep the display fresh and interesting for the general public,” explains show owner Ken Galvin. “This is why no car, except the overall winner, is allowed back the following year.” That overall winner (which becomes the Kumeu poster car for the next year’s show) is voted on by the public, not the entrants or the promoters. So make sure you get along to the main show shed, check out the cool rides, and cast your vote!

Special Attractions in the other Display Sheds

When you need a bit of relief from the sunshine, duck into one of the display sheds. Several clubs are putting on special displays, including the MPH model car club, back again this year with more of its marvellous miniatures and miniature drag racing track. There will also be a Construction Zone with car re-builds. There will also me a Motorbike display with some cool bikes from West Coast Customs as well as a couple of bikes from the U.S.A.

Airbrush Alley

Since its introduction several years ago, Airbrush Alley has become one of the festival’s highlights. Organised by Tony Vowles and Warren Houston of Airbrush Venturi (the largest airbrushing school in Australasia), Airbrush Alley features extremely talented artists creating artworks right in front of the public. Not only can you see airbrushing live, you can also talk with the artists, learn more about the New Zealand Airbrush Venturi courses, and even purchase some of the works. Airbrush Alley runs from 10.00am both days in show shed 2.

Swap and Trade Sites

A wise person once remarked “you could find everything you need to build a car at Kumeu”, and they weren’t wrong. Whether it’s a crate engine from one of the country’s largest aftermarket parts suppliers or a pre-loved gearshift knob off a hot rodder’s small swap site, it’s all at the festival. Finished your project and don’t need parts? No sweat, you can even set up the insurance at the festival! Regardless of what you’re into or the size of your wallet, taking the time to wander amongst all the trade sites and swap meet spaces is an essential part of your day (or two) at ‘Kumeu’.

Retro-O-Rama Vintage Market

Nestled in amongst the trade sites is Retro-O-Rama, a vintage market that’s put together by Andi and Craig from Retro America. “We've taking the Beach Hop style Vintage Market on the road and bringing a bunch of cool vintage, retro and hot rod related businesses to the key hot rod events around the country,” says Andi. “Come along for a spot of shopping, and get a makeover with the Beauty School Dropouts.”

Top Alcohol Drags Display

There’s nothing quite like the smell of nitro, and the cackle through the headers isn’t too shabby either! You’ll be able to experience drag car fire-ups first hand at the TARA (Top Alcohol Racers Association) display directly opposite the main show sheds at 12.30pm both days. An impressive array of drag cars will be on show throughout the weekend too, so make sure you wander over for a look and take a photo or two.

Car Drops

Proudly Sponsored by Tower Cranes NZ

Tower Cranes New Zealand (TCNZ) are providing us with extra outside entertainment in the oval with a 200m high tower to drop cars from to show the impact of what can happen if you crash at speed. They will also have a display of their vehicles and cranes.

Car Corral - Sell your car here!

In this era of instant gratification, some people don’t want to wait for the next issue of NZ Petrolhead with its classified ads to hit the street to find a new hot rod, street machine or classic. Others don’t like buying online, preferring to do the touchy feely thing first. That’s where the Kumeu festival’s ‘Car Corral’ comes in. It’s a large grass area near the show sheds that’s dedicated to vehicles for sale, and the good news is that it’s free for buyers and sellers. No commission, no fees; just take a good look around the car or truck of your dreams, jot down the phone number and give the owner (who, like you, is at the festival) a call, and start haggling!

Miss Kumeu 2018

A ‘Miss Kumeu’ retro fashion competition is welcome addition to the festival. Heats are held both days, across various categories and catering for all ages; there are even two categories for the guys. Participants need to enter by noon on Saturday or Sunday, in the Retro O-Rama area; information about each day’s judging, which happens at 1.00pm at the Classic Cover sponsored VIP tent on Route 66, will be on the entry forms. The judges’ choices from each day will go into the finals, held at The Sound main stage at 2.30pm, an hour before the show’s main prize-giving.
